As a quick follow up to the appeal for helpers from Heidi I would like to update you all on the entries. At the last count we have 248 rounds for Saturday and 294 for Sunday so we are well 'in the money' as long as nothing goes badly wrong with the weather!
It does mean we can look forward to two LONG DAYS. Please do consider coming to help. Many hand make light work, and all that, and we will keep you fed, watered and let you warm up in the heated box!!
So, if you could spare an hour or six either day do please let Heidi or I know!
Mike
Due to a large number of last minute cancellations we have had no choice but to cancel today's rally at Town Place.

I am Jessica McCann, former Southdown East pony club member. I am emailing to see if you and the pony club could help me with my dissertation on equine nutrition. Below is a link to a questionnaire which will take no longer than 10minutes, if you could be kind enough to put this on website or email to current members I would be most grateful.

Dear parents and members,
I would like to wish you all a very Happy New Year and hope that 2014 brings lots of Pony Club fun and achievements for all our members.
As you know, we are holding our first event of the year on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th January at Ardingly showground. This is such an important event for the branch as it kick starts our fundraising for the year. With lots of entries, and many neighbouring branches coming to compete it is vital that we run a well organised, competitive and friendly event.
So, we need your help! PLEASE do respond to offer your time. I need to find approx 20 helpers for each morning and afternoon session on both days. With over 200 members this shouldn't be a big challenge! If your child is competing then please do offer to come early or stay after their classes, or come on the other day. If your child is not competing then it is a great opportunity to support the branch and to meet new members. ANY offer of help will be very much appreciated, even if it is just for a couple of hours. Previous experience is not necessary! If your child is in the mini section of our branch then bring them along to watch and help on the other day where they can enjoy watching the older children compete. This will be very inspiring for them; the puissance class was extremely exciting to watch!
Jobs per am/pm session:
towing jumps to the showground on Friday evening
setting up the showground
indoor ring stewards x 5
tack checkers x 3
car park attendant x 2
arena party to put up jumps x 4
clear round stewards x 3
runners to do jobs! x 2
help with taking food to helpers x1
baking cakes for our team of helpers
clearing the showground on Sunday evening
towing jumps away from the showground
As you can see it is a big job running the event. PLEASE do get back to me ASAP with your availability, heidi.greenwood@sky.com 01825 765163
Don't forget to get your entries in to compete. It would be wonderful to see a fantastic turnout of our members competing. If your child has not competed before and you think it might be suitable for them then please do speak to Candy Robbins (secretary) or I for some advice.
With kind wishes,
Heidi x

I have received the following communication from Jessica Severn J.Severn1@uni.brighton.ac.uk a student at Brighton University (Plumpton). Given riding is not without its risks I think members aged 16 and above who are inclined to participate will be doing something useful and, of course, any of you in tertiary education or planning to go that way will appreciate what it means to have support in research activities.
I will leave it to you to decide if you want to help or not but obviously if I can be of any assistance you only have to ask.
There are two attached documents.
Mike
Dear Mr Nichols,
The frequency of horse rider injury in 16-25 year olds, and the subsequent use of rider's personal protective equipment (P.P.E.)
My name is Jessica Severn, and I am a final third year equine degree student, at Plumpton College in East Sussex.
I am writing to you to ask for your participation in my dissertation, to gain understanding of rider participation as well as the use of the rider's personal protective equipment (P.P.E.), within 16- 25 year olds. This study is designed by Advancing Equine Scientific Excellence with sponsorship from British Equestrian Federation and funding from Sport England and animal nutrition company Alltech. This project is part of the legacy from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games.
The methods of data collection will be from a grand total of 30 participants, these are broken down into, a questionnaire (depth interviews) (of which a total of 20 participants are required), as well as three focus groups (with a minimum of 4 and maximum of 6 participants at each group). A pilot study will be completed, with the inclusion of three participants for the depth interview, and a further three participants for the focus group. Participants for the focus groups will be independent from the depth interviewees.
The participants will be categorised into three groups, these being current riders- riding a minimum of 30 minutes twice a week, lapsed riders-who have experience riding but no longer ride and new riders- with no riding experience, but keen to join the sport. Data collection will be equal among the groups ( e.g. depth interviews- 6 participants for current riders, 7 for lapsed and 7 for new riders), with one focus group for each of the categories of rider.
The benefit of this research will be, awareness for the British Equestrian Federation of reasons which prevent people from riding, as well as key age groups which would be most interested in partaking in horse riding for the first time. This research would assist in the development of new products to encourage people to continue riding regularly. As well as working alongside riding centres.
The pony club has been chosen to take part in this research, as it is the largest youth organisation in the world, encouraging young people to horse ride, and includes the target age group of 16- 25 year olds. Also the diverse range of riding disciplines within the club, allows a range of riders to be interviewed. Participants are required from the East Sussex area.
In order to complete the questionnaires, I will provide a print out of this. I would ideally attend either training events or committee meetings, whereby I would have a group of participants to complete the questionnaires. A responsible person should be present at these times, this may be in the form of a committee member/ training coach. I am flexible to arrange dates and times to arrange the collection of data, with a deadline of data collection proposed as 4th April 2014.
Participants are not required to write their name on questionnaires/ provide this in focus groups, as an identification code will be assigned to each individual. This will ensure that they remain anonyms, and data is confidential. Data will be stored securely, and kept for two years in accordance with the project guidelines. Each participant will also receive a consent form, agreeing to partake in the study, and conform to the study's procedure.
Please see attached a copy of the questionnaire, as well as the consent form for each participant. Prior to the collection of data, I do require a signed consent form from yourself to allow participants within the Pony Club to partake in the study, and would be grateful if you would email this to me via the email address below.
I very much hope that you accept this opportunity to partake in this study, and look forward to hearing from you, in order to arrange times and dates for data collection.
Yours Sincerely,
Jess Severn J.Severn1@uni.brighton.ac.uk

Please find attached the form you will need to renew your membership of the branch in 2014. If you do not respond by 31 January then your membership will lapse and you will no longer have the Pony Club insurance cover. If you do not intend renewing an e-mail to that effect will prevent being hounded.
You may print the form, complete it, and either post it or scan and email. It is also possible to fill the form in using Acrobat Reader and e-mail the pdf file to me saving paper, ink and postage.
Please complete the Gift Aid Declaration if you possibly can. If every member did that, the branch would be about £2,000 better off.
You may wish to make a bank transfer rather than send me a cheque in which case please note that our account is:
20-49-76 30810541
and please give your name as reference.
The reason this message has been sent later than usual is that I did not want transfers arriving before 1 January and thus in the wrong financial year.
You should also find attached a form for booking places at our annual camps.
If you have any queries, please do not reply direct to this email which has been sent out by the DC but contact me at:

Children on lead reins welcome.

Dear All
Due to the bad weather we are expecting tomorrow and the high risk that we could lose power again we have made the decision to postpone Friday's eventing rally until February half term.
I will send out exact details in the near future.
Thanks

I have decided this year not to post a card to each member but to make a donation to the Sussex Horse Rescue Trust in Uckfield who I feel are more deserving beneficiaries than the card manufacturers and Post Office.
Dr Ripley, our Hon. Membership Secretary, and I propose e-mailing out the Membership Renewal Forms on or about 1st January.
May I take this opportunity of wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and I look forward to seeing many of you at Ardingly in January!

The rally is suitable for all ages and will be run from 1-2.30pm. Refreshments will be provided. Parents are welcome to stay and listen.
There will be no rally fee as the aim is to educate and encourage our members.
Please send names to hazelperry@live.com so I can get a rough idea of numbers.

We have been lucky enough to find a space at Felbridge this Saturday morning, 21st December, to hold a jumping practice for those who have put their name forward for small novice and novice team selection at our own show in January being held at Ardingly.
It is rather late notice, but venues are busy and we were fortunate to get this slot.
If you are interested please could you e-mail me your name and name of horse etc. by return - we are limited to 12 places, so will have to be on a "first come" basis.
The practice will cost £7.50 (cash or cheques made to SDHE) and the hire of the arena is £10.00 each (this must be paid in cash on the day)
Candy Robbins

Dear All
The West Sussex BHS Bridleways Officer, Tricia Butcher alerts riders to an online survey by the South Downs National Park Authority. She suggests that as many riders should complete it as possible.
I have completed the survey and it only takes a few minutes; they are simple questions (tick boxes) but there are opportunities to respond in an 'equestrian' way if one is clever in using the boxes marked 'other' and the question 'what advice would you give a visiting friend' !!!!
The SDNPA say that the survey is intended "to gather the thoughts and ideas of as many people as possible. The questions and format for responses are designed to give us the information we need to understand what people think and feel about the South Downs National Park".
The survey is at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/SDNPsharedidentity_public . Please feel free to forward on or distribute this survey widely to others.
The closing date for responses is Monday 16th December.
Help to make sure that they don't forget that we ride in the South Downs NP
Thanks and apologies to those who will have already had this info from other sources.
