Lionel Ripley - RDA Donations

It has been brought to my attention that one of the nominated charities to be supported in memory of Lionel is RDA.  RDA are a national organisation but the branch has been associated locally with Hope in the Valley RDA.

If you do make a donation could you please make any cheque payable to "Hope in the Valley RDA" (or make an equivalent instruction) if you support the focus on the local branch.  Arka Funerals are aware of the preference.

Dear Mike - please could you email round to ask if anyone has got a second hand boys tweed hacking jacket they are happy to sell?  I think we need a 32 or 34 inch  chest.  Just thought I'd check before splashing out on a new one.

Can anyone loan a horse for camp?

I have a young girl named Jess Kraft Who works for me at weekends.

She is currently a student at Heathfield College in the six form. She has joined pony club for the first time this year and is looking to borrow a pony or horse for camp this summer. She has been riding for the last 18 months and is confident in walk trot and canter and jumping around 60cm. If any of you pony club members out there have a nice horse or pony that she could borrow for camp please contact me either via email or by mobile (07766) 463594. I am happy to be a point of reference for her as she is very kind with ponies and loves to ride.

Much appreciated.

Lionel Ripley (1942-2014)

You may or may not have heard that Lionel died suddenly at home last week of a heart attack.  He lived life to the full, was much loved and will be greatly missed by family, friends, former colleagues and students.

The funeral will take place at 1pm on Tuesday 4 February at Woodvale Crematorium North Chapel, BN2 3QB.  This will be followed by a wake at the Bull Inn, Newick, BN8 4LA, from 2.30 onwards.  All those who knew him would be welcome.  Dress as you feel comfortable.  Please RSVP if possible (to jebirbeck@hotmail.com) so we have an idea of numbers.  No flowers, please, but Arka Original Funerals, 01273 476696, are administering charity donations, to the International Glaucoma Association or Riding for the Disabled Association.

Lionel touched many people's lives and we will be compiling a book of memories and photos.  We would very much appreciate contributions which we may also incorporate as part of the service.  If you have any words or images, please feel free to send them.

Many thanks for all the  kind words and offers of support that we have received so far.  We have been overwhelmed by people's warmth and affection for Lionel.

Kind regards

Jan Birbeck (Silanandi)

At risk of duplication, please forward this to anyone you think would wish to know.

B Test

On Tuesday April 8th there is a B Test training day at Crockstead. If you are thinking about taking your B test soon this is worth considering. There are more details on the Area 11 website. Please ask Sarah (by phone not email as her email is broken) or Mike if you would like to do it. Lara hasn't done it so I am afraid I cant give you any more information about the usefulness of it.

B tests are run in the last week of August on an Area wide basis. Entries need to be in well in advance (beginning of July ish) and have to be signed by Mike. You need to talk to Sarah or Polly to see if you are ready to take the test. You do not have to take the 2 parts (Horse Care and Riding) at the same time.

Dr Lionel Ripley

It is with much sadness that I have to inform you of the sudden passing yesterday of Dr Lionel Ripley, our branch Membership Secretary and Treasurer of many years standing.  He was 71.  He is survived by his partner Jan, and two children.

Lionel was a familiar friendly face at Camp, especially Senior Camp where he was the 'welcoming committee' and was well known to anyone riding in our cross country events at Wivelsden Farm as the starter and time keeper.

I will keep you informed concerning funeral arrangements.

On a practical note we may not be able to access any email sent to him so if you did email him in the last week could you please resend the message to me mike.nichols@btinternet.com.  I will deal with renewals and camp bookings on a temporary basis while the Branch Committee seek to appoint a new officer.  We may also need to double check bookings to avoid any mistakes or misunderstandings.  My postal address is:
58 Blackthorns
Lindfield
HAYWARDS HEATH
RH16 2AY

In the mean time the show must go on and we look forward to running a successful two day competition at Ardingly.  Hopefully this will yield a sizeable contribution to branch funds and, once again, we will be able to "make Lionel happy".

RIP.

Mike

Ardingly Jumping

The drawn order for our 2 day show is now on the branch website.

The Small Novice "Green" team of Jodie, Jasmine, Rosie and Rhiannon has been drawn first to go - the team class starts at 9.00 prompt indoors, however the small novice individual starts at 8.45 in the outdoor arena, so you will need to allow time to walk both courses and warm up. The "Yellow" team of Francesca, Georgia, Mimi and Xanthe has been drawn 9th, but will still need to walk the course beforehand.  Sarah Muggeridge will be there for 8.15 to walk the course, so please be ready and suggest you meet by the secretary's box.

The Novice "Red" team of Kezzie, Daniel, Jason & Katie has been drawn first to go and the "Blue" team of Beth, Emma, Alice and Jess 3rd to go.  The individual class is scheduled to start 15 minutes before the team class, so if all goes to plan you will have that also as a warm up (if entered!)

We have estimated that the  Novice teams should start approx. 12.00, but please be ready earlier as we intend to keep things moving through pretty fast, Sarah will be there to do the course walk.

Please all have your horses very clean and plaited. Riders to wear tweed jackets, shirt, ponyclub tie, hairnet, gloves, beige jods. and boots with gaiters etc.

I will have SDHE saddlecloths for the teams which I will leave marked with your name on in the secretary box as I won't be there at 8.00 (my sister Kina will be secretary, so please ask her for them  Please also remember to hand the saddlecloths in to the secretary once you have finished your class, unless filthy, in which case return once you have been able to wash, ready for another event - my Husband complains if I keep washing saddlecloths with his undies!!)

Good luck to everybody taking part and hope you all have an enjoyable day - keep smiling whatever happens, we are the host branch and need to set a high standard of horsemanship.

URGENT - please read

Dear parents and members,

I would like to wish you all a very Happy New Year and hope that 2014 brings lots of Pony Club fun and achievements for all our members.

As you know, we are holding our first event of the year on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th January at Ardingly showground. This is such an important event for the branch as it kick starts our fundraising for the year. With lots of entries, and many neighbouring branches coming to compete it is vital that we run a well organised, competitive and friendly event.

So, we need your help! PLEASE do respond to offer your time. I need to find approx 20 helpers for each morning and afternoon session on both days. With over 200 members this shouldn't be a big challenge! If your child is competing then please do offer to come early or stay after their classes, or come on the other day. If your child is not competing then it is a great opportunity to support the branch and to meet new members. ANY offer of help will be very much appreciated, even if it is just for a couple of hours. Previous experience is not necessary! If your child is in the mini section of our branch then bring them along to watch and help on the other day where they can enjoy watching the older children compete. This will be very inspiring for them; the puissance class was extremely exciting to watch!

Jobs per am/pm session:

towing jumps to the showground on Friday evening

setting up the showground

indoor ring stewards x 5

tack checkers x 3

car park attendant x 2

arena party to put up jumps x 4

clear round stewards x 3

runners to do jobs! x 2

help with taking food to helpers x1

baking cakes for our team of helpers

clearing the showground on Sunday evening

towing jumps away from the showground

As you can see it is a big job running the event. PLEASE do get back to me ASAP with your availability, heidi.greenwood@sky.com  01825 765163

Don't forget to get your entries in to compete. It would be wonderful to see a fantastic turnout of our members competing. If your child has not competed before and you think it might be suitable for them then please do speak to Candy Robbins (secretary) or I for some advice.

With kind wishes,

Heidi x

Request for assistance with a University Student's Dissertation - PLEASE READ.

I have received the following communication from Jessica Severn J.Severn1@uni.brighton.ac.uk a student at Brighton University (Plumpton).  Given riding is not without its risks I think members aged 16 and above who are inclined to participate will be doing something useful and, of course, any of you in tertiary education or planning to go that way will appreciate what it means to have support in research activities.

I will leave it to you to decide if you want to help or not but obviously if I can be of any assistance you only have to ask.

There are two attached documents.

Mike

Dear Mr Nichols,

The frequency of horse rider injury in 16-25 year olds, and the subsequent use of rider's personal protective equipment (P.P.E.)

My name is Jessica Severn, and I am a final third year equine degree student, at Plumpton College in East Sussex.

I am writing to you to ask for your participation in my dissertation, to gain understanding of rider participation as well as the use of the rider's personal protective equipment (P.P.E.), within 16- 25 year olds. This study is designed by Advancing Equine Scientific Excellence with sponsorship from British Equestrian Federation and funding from Sport England and animal nutrition company Alltech. This project is part of the legacy from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games.

The methods of data collection will be from a grand total of 30 participants, these are broken down into, a questionnaire (depth interviews) (of which a total of 20 participants are required), as well as three focus groups (with a minimum of 4 and maximum of 6 participants at each group). A pilot study will be completed, with the inclusion of three participants for the depth interview, and a further three participants for the focus group. Participants for the focus groups will be independent from the depth interviewees.

The participants will be categorised into three groups, these being current riders- riding a minimum of 30 minutes twice a week, lapsed riders-who have experience riding but no longer ride and new riders- with no riding experience, but keen to join the sport. Data collection will be equal among the groups ( e.g. depth interviews- 6 participants for current riders, 7 for lapsed and 7 for new riders), with one focus group for each of the categories of rider.

The benefit of this research will be, awareness for the British Equestrian Federation of reasons which prevent people from riding, as well as key age groups which would be most interested in partaking in horse riding for the first time. This research would assist in the development of new products to encourage people to continue riding regularly. As well as working alongside riding centres.

The pony club has been chosen to take part in this research, as it is the largest youth organisation in the world, encouraging young people to horse ride, and includes the target age group of 16- 25 year olds. Also the diverse range of riding disciplines within the club, allows a range of riders to be interviewed. Participants are required from the East Sussex area.

In order to complete the questionnaires, I will provide a print out of this. I would ideally attend either training events or committee meetings, whereby I would have a group of participants to complete the questionnaires. A responsible person should be present at these times, this may be in the form of a committee member/ training coach. I am flexible to arrange dates and times to arrange the collection of data, with a deadline of data collection proposed as 4th April 2014.

Participants are not required to write their name on questionnaires/ provide this in focus groups, as an identification code will be assigned to each individual. This will ensure that they remain anonyms, and data is confidential. Data will be stored securely, and kept for two years in accordance with the project guidelines. Each participant will also receive a consent form, agreeing to partake in the study, and conform to the study's procedure.

Please see attached a copy of the questionnaire, as well as the consent form for each participant. Prior to the collection of data, I do require a signed consent form from yourself to allow participants within the Pony Club to partake in the study, and would be grateful if you would email this to me via the email address below.

I very much hope that you accept this opportunity to partake in this study, and look forward to hearing from you, in order to arrange times and dates for data collection.

Yours Sincerely,

Jess Severn   J.Severn1@uni.brighton.ac.uk
