Team showjumping 2018

SHOWJUMPING 2018

Team Selection:

We welcome and encourage all our members to step up and "have-a-go" in team events and also to compete as individuals.

However, we remind parents and members that we have a duty of care to our members and do not encourage children to be put forward for classes that are too much for them.

Groupings for both training and team selection are done on the basis of training attendance, experience of pony and rider, age and ability.  This is the competitive element of the branch and we work out teams in collaboration with our trainers with a view to competing with significant success. For example, if a member is competing successfully at 2'6 (reasonably consistent clears) then we will feel happy to include them in a 2'6 team.  We will possibly include them in a 2'9 team if it is felt that the combination is ready to move up a level. However, please remember that a 3 inch height increase also involves a corresponding increase in the width of spreads and often the frequency and nature of fillers and other obstacles.

The health and safety of all our members and their horses is of paramount importance and we will not take what we consider to be unnecessary risks and will not condone over facing either pony or rider.

As a branch, we do not limit the number of teams we enter and will try and accommodate all members who show an interest. However, personal invites are not an option and we will not chase people to join a team.  As we can only enter full teams, there are frequently reserves waiting so please do not try to organise teams yourselves!

Team selection is done through the show jumping organisers: Emily Pincus for L1 and L2 and Candy Robbins for L3 and L4. Emily and Candy liaise with the appropriate instructors, Angela and Briosa,  for their levels – it is up to the instructors who are in the team.

Jumping practices and rallies are run throughout the year so the instructors can see combinations and their progress.  Team selections are NOT made at ordinary working rallies.  It is important for members to attend as many of these rallies as possible to gain experience and also to be able to jump with confidence when attending an event and not be out of their comfort zone.

For some competitions, such as Area and Interbranch, combinations have to be "rallied up" – attend a minimum of 3 working rallies.

Look out for e-mails with details regarding show jumping practices or  the programme on our website.

Team Events:

Please remember that when you are competing in a SDHE team, you are representing the branch and so we ask and expect the following:

Rudeness, pushiness or aggression towards anyone will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

Clean and  plaited horses wearing clean, plain tack and equally clean and correctly turned out members (this includes hairnets, ties, gloves, beige jodphurs at all times – NO BLING!)

Appropriate behaviour and manners from all members and all those that they bring with them

The team manager only is to liaise with the event organisers. Multiple parents interfering causes stress and confusion. As a branch that organises large events itself, we are all aware that everything goes a lot smoother when dealing with 1 branch representative.  If an issue arises or you have a query, please contact either Candy or Emily who will sort everything out.

Here's to a successful 2018 season of show jumping.

report from our 2 day jumping show at Crockstead last weekend

Our 2 day jumping show was held last weekend at Crockstead EC, a new venue for us after many successful years at Ardingly – sadly the Abergavenny building has been deemed no longer suitable for equine use.

The weekend was much quieter than we are used to with many members being away for the half term holiday, but we still saw some good competition and the sun shone all weekend – a first for us!!  Next year the half term will be avoided but this year we had to take the dates that were available after having the plug pulled on Ardingly so close to the event.

Saturday saw the mini mini and mini team and scurry classes as well as the popular mini/major relay providing fun for all.

In the mini mini scurry Daisy Burgess riding Eaglehust Batman finished in 3rd place and Keira Beasley riding Cookie came 6th out of 11 starters.

There were just 2 teams in the mini  mini team class and we  finished in 2nd place. Team members were Lily Musson riding Madam, Keira Beasley riding Cookie and Tilly Appleyard riding BP.

9 pairs contested the relay. Daisy Burgess riding Eaglehurst Batman and Emily Allardyce Bassett riding Heather came a very respectful 4th

The mini scurry had 14 starters and it was a great win for Izzy Jeffrey on Monty. Also in the placings were Emily Allardyce Bassett riding Heather finishing in 3rd place and Anna Currie riding Brie in 6th place.

The mini teams had 3 teams – SDHW were clear winners and we had to jump off for the placings – Ella Dean rode a beautiful round on Ollie for us to finish 3rd. Other team members were Anna Currie riding Brie and Ella Currie riding Prince.

Sunday – The Small Novice class with an individual incorporated had 4 teams.  We came up trumps with a great win for Sophie Etherington riding Lady, Lily Taylor Martin riding Dipsy and Abigail Johnson riding Monty.  For the individual places Abigail and Monty came 2nd and Lily and Dipsy came 3rd – well done girls!

The popular Debut Dengie had 31 starters – Abigail Johnson riding Monty came 3rd and go forward to the next round at Golden Cross on 18th March.  Well done Monty winning his 4th rosette of the weekend, lots of polo's for you!

The Novice team and individual had 5 teams competing with our branch finishing in 2nd and 3rd places. 2nd place team were Charlotte Subedar riding Paddy, Frankie Walker riding Misty and Millie Easton riding Annagh Girl. 3rd place team were Matthew Perry riding The Grey Fellow, Rosie Petracopoulos riding Eddie and Ellie Mileham riding Tilly.

Frankie came 2nd as an individual and Ellie came 5th – well done girls

Dengie Winter League had 20 starters with 9 jumping clear to go into the jump off. Matthew Perry and The Grey Fellow flew the flag for our branch and came 1st with the only double clear!

Rosie finished in 2nd place, Frankie in 5th and Ellie in 6th.  Matthew and Rosie qualify for the next round on 18th March.

We did not have an Intermediate team but there were 11 individuals.  Matthew Perry and The Grey Fellow finished in 2nd place, a great weekend for this pair.

Despite having less entries than normal it was a great success for the branch. Huge thanks to ALL that helped over the weekend, as it is these events that raise funds for our branch and subsidise rallies and the camps that all our members enjoy going to.

Help is always much needed, even an hour is fantastic and you do get fed and watered!  Please support your branch this year and pop the following dates into your diary so that you can both compete and help. Without help, we can't run events and without events we would not be able to keep costs down.

Sunday 13th May – Hunter Trial at Wivelsden Farm

Sunday 10th June – One Day Event at Wivelsden Farm

Sunday 22nd July – Branch Show at Plumpton Racecourse

Sunday 9th September – Mini One Day Event – Wivelsden Farm

Sunday 23rd September – Hunter Trial at Wivelsden Farm

Requests for help and the type of help needed will be circulated near the event – please HELP!

More Interbranch competitions will be circulated shortly.  In the meantime take a look at our programme on the website which lists rallies on offer. In order to compete you will need to attend some of these sessions but you are also very welcome to attend rallies and not compete!

Wanted: Pony Club Pony for loan or LWVTB

Please note, allowing members and others to post adverts for members is a service which Southdown East branch of the Pony Club is offering to members as a benefit of membership.  It is done in good faith and without any liability on the part of the Pony Club.  If you enter into any arrangement advertised or purchase any item following an advertisement listed by the branch, you do so as a private individual, without recourse to the Pony Club, and must satisfy yourself that any product or arrangement is suitable for your circumstances.

13'1 – 14'2, sensible pony wanted for my petite 12 year old daughter to do all PC activities. We have had a 12hh  Welsh Section B on loan for the last 2+ years, but he is now sadly outgrown.

We would prefer a gelding, but will look at mares if it's the right one.  Age is not a problem it just needs to have the right temperament, be good in open spaces, easy to handle, good in traffic and load etc.

She really enjoys dressage & showing, but would like to do more jumping and  gain more confidence in this area. She has attended PC camp for the last 3 years and we are members of Equi-fun as well.

The pony will be stabled at a lovely yard in Peacehaven, East Sussex with a lit school and local hacking.

Please let me know if you think you have anything which would be suitable.

Many Thanks
